BUILDING PEACE and SECURITY – A building for the African Union in Addis Ababa
Restricted open architectural competition
Objectives and tasks of the competition
The German government intends to construct a new building in order to support the African Union by providing adequate premises for the Peace and Security Department. The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) GmbH was commissioned by the German Federal Foreign Office for the development and execution of the project.
The competition brief was to design a new Building for the Peace and Security Departement for the African Union.
The building is to be centrally situated on the grounds of the African Union in Addis Ababa, the capitol of Ethiopia. The building should be directly adjacent to the new Congress Centre of the African Union (AUCC), where building is to shortly follow.
The new P&S Building should exemplarily fulfil the criteria of environmentally conscious and ecological construction. It should also be environmentally friendly, energy efficient and renewable energy sources are to be used. It comprises approx. 11.500 m² gross floor area (GFA) and offers approx. 370 new jobs.
The goal was to find the best designs for this important building.
The department of Peace and Security and therefor the new building are of central importance to the African Union and that is why it should be perceived as the ‘centrepiece’ of the whole area.

City of Wolfhagen
Disposition of a development plan for the Hessen Campus Wolfhagen in the Pommern barracks, declared as „special area education“.
After abandoning the Pommern barracks for military use in 2008, the barracks shall be developed as a park for innovation with a compound of industry, start-up business and institutions of educa-tion. The core element of the new use will be the Hessen Campus Wolfhagen, developed by GHT projectmanagement in the buildings of the former accommodation and education facilities. Here will be room for the professional school of Wolfhagen and other education and research facilities, closely linked to a number of further innovative companies within the barracks compound.
For this project ANP arranges the development plan under the aspect of „special area education“ to establish a legal basis for the realisation of the Hessen Campus Wolfhagen.
